Using oil and other raw materials from algae cultivation at the molecular level, UCSD laboratories turn them into customized bioplastics. The molecules are designed so that the chemical bonds can be broken by naturally occurring microorganisms. This stable plastic is then used for the development of the necessary products that meet the characteristics of petroleum-based polymers.
